Hazardous area is a location, which have the potential risk of explosion or fire due to the presence of flammable gases, chemicals, vapors, liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers. Such areas are found in most of the facilities like chemical and petrochemical processing, refineries, storage tanks, other similar locations.

How is hazardous area classified? What are the most widely used standards in this classification?

To reduce the risk of explosion in these locations, government, industry, and professional organizations have joined together to develop standards for classifying hazardous locations and techniques which may be applied to prevent them.

National Electrical Code (NEC) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are two major standards used to classify hazardous areas and well known worldwide.
